Ever since my introduction to the latest wave of feminism back in July of this year, I have had a solid interest in the issues which feminism tries to tackle.
For part of my Literature degree, I have been studying Caryl Churchill's play Top Girls. Since it was written in 1979 and first performed in 1982 I had a feeling that feminism would creep up in there somewhere. And of course, I was correct. The play focusses on the rise of the working woman, and the choice she must face; motherhood Vs. career progression, a dilemma that women still face today, over 30 years on.
Studying this particular play has also brought out a lot of things which I didn't realise. Whilst I am aware that women aren't being paid as much as men, I didn't know that the Equal Pay Act was introduced in 1970...I find it disgusting that 41 years later it is still not totally in action. It just goes to show that we must still push and support feminism and make sure that this new wave has an effect, I really hope that unequal pay despite an Act doesn't make it to 50 years.
If you can, go see Top Girls. I know that it's currently on at the Trafalgar Studios in London, but due to the tickets being £28 and me being a student, I can't really go. If you're in the same situation as me, read it! Honestly, I thought it was brilliant. But maybe if you're not someone with theatre experience it might be a little harder to put it onto a stage in your mind...I don't know...either way, interact with this play! I learnt a lot, you probably will too.
