But anyway, we ended up going to see The Help, our main reason being that it was on at a good time after our dinner (bloody love TGI Fridays) and sweet jebus I am glad we went.
Since being at University, I don't really find much out about current films unless I go looking for the info online so it's always like picking the chance card in a game of Monopoly when I go to the cinema. But I kind of like that, it removes any sort of expectation that some reviewer, who has a DVD stuck up their arse, attempts to instil within you.
So we got into the cinema, settled down with our KitKat chunkies and absorbed the film. Facckkkkkk. It was so good! The film is set in the world of the 1960s southern society girls (hello there wonderful costumes) and their help - a group of black women paid next to nothing to do everything around the house. The film shows the true struggle and the depth of the issues that these women faced, and how such a 'perfect' appearing society was in fact highly corrupted.
It's based around the novel The Help, written by Kathryn Stockett, I haven't read the book myself but have heard that it's wonderful. But there's always the issue of is-the-book-better-than-the-film, and I don't want to ruin that film.
Away from the plot line and onto the actors, they were brilliant! Emma Stone portrayed the character of Skeeter with real depth and feeling, and Octavia Spencer made an awesome Minnie. There wasn't an actor who stood out as "meh" to me, nor the weakest. All performances within the film are of superb quality...nearly bringing me to tears (I've cried at 3 films in my life, this is a real heart of stone).
Emma Stone as Skeeter
I highly recommend this film, it's one of the best films I have seen in a while...GO SEE IT.
